Bobowa Travel Guide

Bobowa

Bobowa Coat of ArmsBobowa Travel Guide - a place in south eastern Poland in the province of Malopolska. Bobowa is a town in Gorlice County. Administratively attached to the Lesser Polish Voivodeship or Malopolskie, it is located 18 kilometres from Gorlice, on the Biała Tarnowska River and is one of the oldest settlements situated in the valley of the Biała River.

Cluture, Tourism and the Economy

The town is famous for its rich folklore and beautiful hand made crafts. Women from Bobowa have been making bobbin laces for many years. They are made by tying and interlacing linen thread spun over smoothly turned bobbins. Particular threads are, made individually then fastened to the pins in the cushion or cylinder that have a pattern on it. The thread is then interlaced either thinly or more thickly depending on the type of design required.

The principles of lace-making arrived here from Genua, Milan and Brugge and the history of bobbin laces in Bobowa takes back to the beginning of the 16th century. Due to this rich tradition the town founded a National School of Lace-making in 1899 and students from the school won a bronze medal at an exhibition in Saint Louise in 1902 and a gold medal in San Francisco in 1905.

That is how cottage work in the town has now become a vocational training centre which is being continued today by Zespół Szkół Zawodowych im. St. Wyspiańskiego in Bobowa. The school still provides training schemes for lace makers and embroiderers. The local Handicraft Society provides a support network and contacts with professional lace makers within Bobowa and elsewhere. They also organise exhibitions, competitions and subsidize lace-making workshops for local children and teenagers in the Bobowa area, many of which are run by the Local Culture Centre.

Geography of Bobowa

Awaiting details.

History of Bobowa

It was formerly a village having lost its status as a town in 1934 but regained this on 1 January 2009. It lies approximately 83 km (52 miles) south-east of the regional capital of Kraków.

Bobowa's origins date back to the Middle Ages with the Jaworski and Długoszowski families owning the town for the longest time. Its importance in the medieval period is evidenced by its three churches and the trade privileges granted, but in 1732 Michał Jaworski, the town's then owner, permitted Jews to settle in Bobowa, primarily due to trade and their ability in such crafts as tailoring, baking and cap-making. There was a fire that destroyed the town in 1889.

In 1900 the Jewish population was 749. By 1914, Jews made up 48% of the town's total population. It was the home of General Bolesław Wieniawa-Długoszowski whom was president of Poland for a day in 1939 and his brother, Kazek was the mayor.

In October 1941, the Germans created a ghetto at Bobowa, which was liquidated in August 1942. Twenty-five people were shot and about 700 were sent to Stróżówka, where a mass execution took place in the Garbacz forest. The rest were deported to camps. There are no Jews in the town today.
