Elbląg

Elbląg Travel Guide Elbląg in north western Poland in the province of Warmińsko-Mazurskie. Elbląg (German: Elbing) is a city in northern Poland about 60 km from the Baltic sea port of Gdansk, with 127,892 inhabitants as of 2006.

It is the capital of Elbląg County and has been part of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship since 1 January 1999. Before 1999 it was the capital of Elbląg Voivodeship (1975 to 1998) and a county seat in Gdańsk Voivodeship from 1945 to 1975. The city is a port on the River Elbląg, part of the Elbląg Uplands, which flows into the Vistula Lagoon about 10 km to the north, thus giving the city access to the Baltic Sea via the Russian controlled Strait of Baltiysk.

It was first mentioned as “Ilfing” in The Voyages of Ohthere and Wulfstan which was written in Anglo-Saxon in King Alfred's reign using information from a Viking who had visited the area.

During the Middle Ages, the Old Prussian settlement of Truso was located at Lake Drużno near the current site of Elbląg in historical Pogesania; the settlement burned down in the 10th century. The Teutonic Knights conquered the region and the inhabitants were dispersed in the process. The Teutonic Order built a castle in 1237 and founded Elbing in 1246 at the lake with a population mostly from Lübeck; today the much smaller lake does not reach the city any more. It was the seat of the ‘Land Master', the most important authorities of the Teutonic Order until 1309.

The first Ship yard in Poland was built at Elbląg in 1570/72.

After the defeat of the Teutonic Knights and the destruction of the castle by the inhabitants, the city was under the sovereignty of the Polish Crown (1466), the Kingdom of Prussia (1772), and Germany (1871).

Elbing was heavily damaged in World War II, its German citizens were expelled upon the war's end and the city became part of Poland in 1945 being repopulated with Polish citizens.

Transport in Elbląg

As from 20 January 2016 Olsztyn Masuria Airport opened its doors with two flight destinations, Berlin and Krakow three times a week. The nearest other international airports serving the Warmińsko-Mazurskie region are Warsaw Chopin Airport, Gdańsk's Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN), and Bydgoszcz's Ignacy Jan Paderewski Airport (BZG).

Transport

Olsztyn Masuria Airport

Olsztyn the capital of the Warmińsko-Mazurskie region with about 175,000 inhabitants, (with 1.5 million inhabitants in the region), now has an international airport at Szczytno-Szymany. It began its operations on January 20, 2016 with a flight to Berlin, Germany. The airport has a runway 2000 meters long and 60 meters wide, Currently it has a broken ILS system, and is located in Szymany in Mazury region. The airport management has rebranded the airport to “Olsztyn-Mazury”, so it would better encapsulate the whole region of Mazury and its lakes, which is better well known.

The airport is situated 59 kilometres to the south of Olsztyn, at the border with the more densely populated part of the Mazowsze region. Also other larger towns can be found (50-60 thousand people) within a 60 kilometres distance such as Mława, Ciechanów, Ostrołęka. This airport has in its catchment area a population of 2.7 million people taken from both voivodeships.

In order to provide better access, a rail link from Olsztyn to the airport has been built, using an exsisting rail branch, upgrading the rail line. A journey time to the centre of Olsztyn is about 45 minutes. In the future, there are plans for a rail link to Białystok through Ostrołęka, and another to Ełk.
