Gorzów Wielkopolski Travel Guide - Gorzów Wielkopolski in western Poland in the province of Lubuskie is a city situated on the lower Warta River at the confluence with the Klodawka. It is the second largest city in the Lubusz Voivodeship with a population of 125,149 inhabitants as of June 2009. It is one of two capitals within the Voivodeship, the other being Zielona Góra and Gorzów Wielkopolski was previously the capital of the Gorzów Voivodeship from 1975 to 1998.

During and shortly after the World War it was a zoo. From 1960 to 1964 the park underwent a complete renovation and restoration program.

The first mention of the settlement was in 1254 when it was captured by Brandenburg and in 1257 a town was founded. It was encircled by defensive walls and became part of the Neumark of Brandenburg where they based their campaigns against Poland and West Pomerania. In 1774 the Bydgoszcz Canal was opened stimulating economic growth through commercial water transport.

Culture and Tourism

Gorzów is famous for its fine sportsmen including olympic and world champions and national representatives. In recent years the city has been known for a former Polish Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz, who comes from Gorzów Wielkopolski. For theatre goers there is the Julisz Osterwa Theatre.

A Gothic Cathedral stands in the city centre which was constructed in stages from about 1290 with a large tower being added in the 14th century which was made higher in 1621. On the west bank of the Warta next to the bridge stands a timber-framed granary built in 1798.

Around Gorzów there are two large forest areas: Gorzów Woods (Puszcza Gorzowska) to north, where Barlinek-Gorzów Landscape Park is situated, and Noteć Woods (Puszcza Notecka) to the southeast.

Economy

Between the World Wars the city was a centre for the manufacturing of armaments. The biggest oil fields in Poland are located near Gorzów Wielkopolski. Other industries include artificial fiber, textiles and mechanical plants. It is also a river port.
