Kazimierz Dolny Travel Guide Kazimierz Dolny is a place in south eastern central Poland in the province of Lubelskie. The town of Kazimierz Dolny situated on the right bank of the river Vistula is regarded as one of the most beautiful towns in the country being located in the region of Lubelskie in Poland, on the Lublin plateau.

Nearby are the Loess Hills. Kazimierz Dolny includes the town and 14 parishes. The population is about 7,300, of whom 2,300 reside in the town itself. Kazimierz Dolny covers over 72.5 sq. km with the town covering 30.4 sq.km.

Due to it's attractive position, much history, picturesque medieval houses, interesting architecture and a good climate, the town of Kazimierz Dolny is known throughout Poland and abroad as a tourist center where guests can relax and enjoy their holidays. There are a number of hotels, boarding houses and restaurants just waiting to be enjoyed by thoses visiting the area. The historic architecture and the attractive position of Kazimierz together with the surrounding countryside continue to pull visitors from Poland and further afield. In 1994 the President of the Polish Republic published a decree naming Kazimierz Dolny a centre of historical importance.

With little industrial activites in the local area, flora and fauna is allowed to flourish and some rare species can be found in the area. In order to protect these as well as the historic buildings, a “Landscape Park” was created in 1979. Nine important areas have been designated as nature reserves. One of them is called “Krowia Wyspa” (Cows Island) and is a breeding area for water birds of many kinds. The park is accsessible to walkers who can use the many footpaths that have been created to encourage visitors to walk around and enjoy the lovely views and the surrounding countryside.

The town centre with it's market square and adjacent streets where visitors can take in the sights and admire the renaissance buildings. From the “Baszta” (Tower), you can see the ruins of the castle and the “Hill of the Three Crosses”, and enjoy a panoramic view of the town. During the holiday season the townn hosts a number of performances such as the all Polish Festival of Orchestras and Folk Singers. There are concerts in the local Parish Church, a vintage car rally, a film and arts festival, and a ‘students' song festival.

The town most likely takes it's name from, 'King Casimir (Kazimierz) the Just',from the 12th centary. It became prosperous under the reign of, 'Casimir the Great', at the turn of the 17th century through the trading of grain. Until World War II it had a sizeable Jewish population including artists, writers and film directors.
