Kętrzyn Travel Guide Kętrzyn in north western Poland in the province of Warmińsko-Mazurskie.

Kętrzyn (former Polish name: Rastembork), is a town in north eastern Poland at the edge of the Mazurian Great Lakes situated on the Guber River, with 28,351 inhabitants as of 2004. Situated in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship since 1 January 1999, Kętrzyn was previously in the Olsztyn Voivodeship from 1975 to 1998 and is the capital of Kętrzyn County.

Kętrzyn began as a settlement by a Prussian tribe and in 1329 a Teutonic watchtower was built being replaced in around 1360 by a brick constructed castle. The settlement that grew around the castle received municipal rights in 1357. The Prussian Union in the early 15th century acting against the Teutonic Knights held the town which was called Rastembork.

The city was renamed in 1950 after Wojciech Kętrzyński a historian and a director of Ossolineum Library at Lvov (died in 1918). A monument to Wojciech Kętrzyński stands outside the town hall which dates back to 1885 and the Evangelical Augsburg Church was built in the 16th century over the site of a former Gothic chapel. Fragments of the old defensive town walls can be seen in the town.

The Teutonic castle, of Gothic style was reconstructed in 1961-7 and now houses the Wojciech Kętrzyński Museum about him and the nature of the region of Warmia and Mazuria, art, religious sculpture and porcelain such as Meissen items.

The local economy is supported by food processing, electro engineering, textiles and associated wood industries.

Hitler's command post known as the Wolf's Lair is situated nearby hidden in a forest at Gieloz and can be reached by bus from Kętrzyn.

Transport in Kętrzyn

As from 20 January 2016 Olsztyn Masuria Airport opened its doors with two flight destinations, Berlin and Krakow three times a week. The nearest other international airports serving the Warmińsko-Mazurskie region are Warsaw Chopin Airport, Gdańsk's Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN), and Bydgoszcz's Ignacy Jan Paderewski Airport (BZG).

The bus and train stations in Kętrzyn lay next to each other about 600 metres southeast of the town centre with bus services to places like Gizycko, Węgorzewo and Olsztyn and train routes to Gdansk via Elblag and Gizycko and Olsztyn.
