Located in Nowy Sącz County in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, within the lovely Beskids Mountains which are part of the Carpathians.

A Spa Town

It is the largest spa town in Poland and known as The Pearl of Polish Spas having a number of swimming pools. Mineral water is perhaps the life blood of Krynica-Zdrój and a most valuable natural resource.

There are a large number of types of mineral water that are reported to have curative powers, among them are: Zdrój Główny (the Main Spring), Słotwinka, Jan, Józef, Mieczysław, Tadeusz and Zuber. You will find that the “Main Pump Room”, is located in the centre, the pedestrian zone and is open daily from 6:30am to 18:00.

A popular town in summer to visit as a tourist due to the cultural events in summer and in winter it is good for skiers and other seasonal sports. Spring in Krynica can still be perfect for the skiers, as with good weather conditions the snow stays around until April.

Museums

Nikifor Museum

The Nikifor Museum in Krynica was opened in 1995.

The Museum preserves paintings by Nikifor who was a self-taught painter born around 1895, whose works were first discovered in the 1930s and known as “naive art”, they earned fame throughout Poland and further afield. A life-long resident of Krynica, Nikifor was given the name of Krynicki in 1962. His childhood was spent in abject poverty, and at the end of his life he had the honor of exhibiting his paintings in prestigious galleries around the world. His art work included more than 2,000 watercolours on various media such as paper, cardboard and boxes. Nikifor's prevalent themes were urban landscapes, buildings, churches and, though less frequent, religious scenes and portraits. He signed his paintings with a meaningless series of letters.

The Museum now has seventy seven works by the artist Nikifor. Most of them were painted during the inter-war period, and are considered to be the best among his artistic achievement. Also on view is his modest atelier, the famous chest in which he kept all his possessions, the stamps he made and his photographs taken by Nikifor's legal custodian, the artist Marian Wosinski, in the last ten years of the artist's life. The exhibition contains both books and articles on Nikifor by Polish and foreign writers including posters, exhibition catalogues and invitations.

Places to Eat in Krynica-Zdrój

There are many restaurants covering the usual pizza to those offering local Polish traditional and regional cuisine.

What Wikipeda says about Polish Cuisine

Polish cuisine (Polish: kuchnia polska) is a style of cooking and food preparation originating from Poland. It has evolved over the centuries due to historical circumstances. Polish national cuisine shares some similarities with other Central European and Eastern European traditions as well as French and Italian similarities. It is rich in meat, especially pork, chicken and beef (depending on the region) and winter vegetables (cabbage in the dish bigos), and spices.

It is also characteristic in its use of various kinds of noodles the most notable of which are kluski as well as cereals such as kasha (from the Polish word kasza). Generally speaking, Polish cuisine is hearty and uses a lot of cream and eggs. The traditional dishes are often demanding in preparation. Many Poles allow themselves a generous amount of time to serve and enjoy their festive meals, especially Christmas eve dinner (Wigilia) or Easter breakfast which could take a number of days to prepare in their entirety.

The Polish national dishes are bigos; pierogi; kielbasa; kotlet schabowy (type of breaded cutlet); gołąbki (type of cabbage roll); zrazy (type of roulade); roast (Polish: pieczeń); sour cucumber soup (Polish: zupa ogórkowa); mushroom soup, (Polish: zupa grzybowa) (quite different from the North American cream of mushroom); tomato soup (Polish: zupa pomidorowa); rosół (variety of meat broth); żurek (sour rye soup); flaki (variety of tripe soup); and barszcz among others.
