Województwo Pomorskie

Pomorskie or Pomeranian Voivodeship is located in the north of the country on the Baltic Sea, at the mouth of Polands longest river, the Vistula. To the west it borders with the Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeship and to the south the Wielkopolskie and Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeships, to the east the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship and to the north the Baltic Sea.

The coastal landscape is composed of dunes, coastal lakes, wide beaches and sandbars. The coastal location has to a great extent determined the economy of the region. The capital of the region is Gdańsk, a city of almost half a million inhabitants and has a 1,000 year history.

Other large cities and towns are: Gdynia, Słupsk, Tczew and Sopot. The region covers an area of 18,293 square kilometres. The population of the region is about 2.2 million people and has 42 towns and nearly 3,000 villages. Administratively, it is divided into 16 rural and 4 town districts which are further divided into 123 gminas.

Economy

Industry within the region includes: the maritime economy, shipbuilding, oil and chemicals, petroleum refining, machines, construction, food processing, furniture making, electrical, energy, clothing, agriculture, fishery, paper mills and food processing. Its GDP per capita is fifth among Poland’s 16 regions, and the nominal domestic product puts it in the seventh position. At Bytów there is an industrial centre that includes wood, clothing and food industries.

Tourism

There are two National Parks, Słowiński National Park and Bory Tucholskie National Park, to be found in the Pomorskie Voivodeship together with 9 landscape parks and a number of nature reserves, which are open to the public. The landscape has wide geographic variations: from lowlands that are 1.6 metres below sea level to the highest peak of the Central European Uplands, Wieżyca at 329 metres above sea level.

Culture

The Pomorskie region is known for two famous festivals: the International Song Festival at Sopot and the International Festival of Organ Music at the cathedral in Gdańsk-Oliwa.
