Rybnik

Rybnik Travel Guide - Rybnik in south western Poland in the province of Slaskie. Rybnik in the Silesian Voivodeship is located close to the border with the Czech Republic and just outside the southern border of the largest urban area in Poland, the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union.

It borders with the following areas: - to the north, Kuźnia Raciborska and Pilchowice, east, Żory and Czerwionka, south Radlin, Świerklany and Marklowice and in the west with Rydułtowy, Jejkowice, Gaszowice and Lyski. Situated on the River Nacyna flowing through the city from south to north, being a tributary of the River Ruda which itself is the right-hand tributary of the River Odra.Towards the northern part of the town is the Golejowska Highland.

The city is the 25th largest in Poland and lies about 290 km south of Warsaw and about 100 km west of Kraków. Located within the Raciborz Oswiecim Valley on the Rybnik Plateau at an altitude of about 210-290 metres above sea level.

The city has a population of about 141,350 as of June 2009, and its metropolitan area is 0.7 million. The area around the city is an important economic region of Poland with a large coal mining industry. Rybnik is also a centre of culture with a famous School of Music and Philharmonic Orchestra. The city has changed from a typical coal-mining community to one of an education centre for about 600 thousand people living in the surrounding area.

The name of the town means ‘Fish Pond', and it is a reminder that a fishing settlement existed on the site in the 10th century.

Within the area many forests can be found, mostly deciduous forests with reed beds, sub-aqua forests including moist boggy areas. There is a high concentration of rare species of flora and fauna along the river banks and streams and beavers. A fragment of peat bog can be found east of Rybnik at Paruszowiec. The Common Larch (Latin: Anromeda polifolia), Round-leaved Sundew (Latin: Drosera), Cranberry (Latin: Oxycoccus quadripetalus) are also present. In Głębokie Doły there are numerous deer, stags and fallow deer, with concentrations of Carpathian beech (Karpat beech). Besides the above, found in and around the town are peculiar anthropogenic forms, cone-like waste dumps of stone which has occurred as a result of the coal mining industry.
