Sanok Coat of ArmsSanok Travel Guide - “The Royal Free City of Sanok”, Polish: Królewskie Wolne Miasto Sanok, is a town in the Subcarpathian Voivodship south-eastern Poland, located on the banks of the San River with a population of 39,110 people, as of June 2009.

Sanok is one of the oldest settlements in Polska and takes pride in that it was mentioned as a local administrative centre within Halych Ruthenia in 1150. It was granted Magdeburg Rights in 1339 and was the capital of the Sanok Land being one of the five Lands of the Ruthenian Voivodeship.

It is still the main administrative, cultural, industrial, academic and communication centre for the Bieszczady region and offers visitors a variety of activities and attractions.

You will find the full range of accommodation in this town from the most luxurious five star hotels with up to date and modern amenities to pensions (a type of guest house or boarding house) and rooms or apartments at very reasonable prices. Some of the larger towns and cities will also have hostels.

If you prefer to stay in a more rural location there are a number of “Agro” style of accommodation places on farms and in the countryside plus there may be camp sites nearby.

Active Tourism - Trails

If you enjoy walking, there are a number of mountain walking routes centred around the town of Sanok.

About 30% of the area is located within the Stonne Mountains Landscape Park not far from the well known Bieszczady National Park and other protected Landscape Parks such as: Ciśniańsko-Wetliński, San Valley, Jaśliski and the Przemyśl Piedmont.

If you are in Sanok why not take a walk along the banks of the San River on the “Błękitny San”, Blue San - a program designed to protect the waters of the San River and its tributaries.

Other trails include the “Good Soldier Švejk's Adventures Trail”, the “Icons” Trail with examples of wooden Orthodox architecture, the “San River Fortification Trail” about the history of a famous fortification lines from World War II, known as the Molotov Line.

Sanok Castle
The Renaissance Sanok Royal Castle was built in the late 14th century. The castle is situated on the San River on a hill overlooking the town and is about 317 metres above sea level. Currrently the castle is home of the Sanok Historical Museum.

Geography of Sanok

Sanok Park MiejskiThe town of Sanok takes its name from the River San and is located at the intersection of the main roads leading from the regional city of Rzeszów, Przemyśl, and Kraków to Lake Solina and onwards towards the Bieszczady Mountains situated in the extreme south east corner of Poland.

Known as the gateway to the Bieszczady Mountains it is one of the larger towns in the area that leads to two border crossings at Krościenko for Ukraine and Radoszyce for Slovakia.

Museum of Folk Architecture

Museum of Folk Architecture (Muzeum Budownictwa Ludowego) is an open air ethnographic museum (Skansen) being the largest one of it's kind in Poland. It has numerous permanent and temporary exhibits and also arranges cultural events through out the year.

The Museum of Folk Architecture in Sanok, includes a reconstruction of a Galician market made up of 40 old wooden buildings which heralds and reflects the atmosphere of the region's past dating back to the turn of the twentieth century.

Historical Museum

The Historical Museum is located within the Renaissance castle and an eighteenth-century tenement house on top of the hill overlooking Sanok. The museum houses a valued collection of Orthodox icons and utensils from the 15th century to the 19th century and has the largest collection of Zdzislaw Beksinski's works.

Other items on display include a collection of sacral art from the Roman Catholic Church and various other contemporary artists' works. Expansion of the castle's southern wing should make room for more collections in the future.

It is one of the oldest tourist societies in Europe and was was created by the merger of two societies: Polish Tatry Society (1873) and Polish Country Lovers Society (1906).

I have been unable to locate a website for this official tourist office but I did visit it when I stayed in Sanok in June 2013. It is well worth a visit if you are in the town and during my stay there was a gentleman who spoke good english and was very helpful.
