Świebodzin Travel Guide

Świebodzin

Świebodzin Travel Guide - Świebodzin is a place in western Poland in the province of Lubuskie.

Świebodzin, originally a German town under the name of Schwiebus, now a town in north western Poland with about 21,750 inhabitants as of 2004 and is the capital of Świebodzin County. The town's name is derived from the Polish personal name of Świeboda, related to swoboda meaning “freedom.

Between 1975 and 1998 it was formerly part of the Zielona Góra Voivodeship, being a reconfiguration of the old German state of Prussia, which was annexed by Poland after World War II in 1945 and led to the expulsion of its native German population and the repopulation of the city and the environment by the Polish. Since the Local Government Reorganization Act of 1998, Świebodzin has been part of Lubusz Voivodeship.

Accommodation

Hotel Lubuski

The website of this simple hotel states the following: - “Located in the city centre, offers 100 beds in single and double rooms and provides laundry services.”

Stayed here on 7 June 2015 - booked through a well known booking agent for 94 PLN but not told that there was a car parking charge of 17 PLN, breakfast not included so another 13 PLN making 124 PLN. Recepionist spoke some English.

The hotel is set back from the main road, easy to find, in the centre of Świebodzin. The room I stayed in was comfortable, a little basic and old fashioned but ok (for me).  As with many places I have stayed in during my Polish travels, this hotel needs to be updated soon otherwise it will vanish as travelers, even those of us with basic needs will go elsewhere.

Besides the extra cost, there were no lights in the corridoor so searching for the key hole was anoying.

What Wikipeda says about Polish Cuisine

Polish cuisine (Polish: kuchnia polska) is a style of cooking and food preparation originating from Poland. It has evolved over the centuries due to historical circumstances. Polish national cuisine shares some similarities with other Central European and Eastern European traditions as well as French and Italian similarities. It is rich in meat, especially pork, chicken and beef (depending on the region) and winter vegetables (cabbage in the dish bigos), and spices.

It is also characteristic in its use of various kinds of noodles the most notable of which are kluski as well as cereals such as kasha (from the Polish word kasza). Generally speaking, Polish cuisine is hearty and uses a lot of cream and eggs. The traditional dishes are often demanding in preparation. Many Poles allow themselves a generous amount of time to serve and enjoy their festive meals, especially Christmas eve dinner (Wigilia) or Easter breakfast which could take a number of days to prepare in their entirety.

The Polish national dishes are bigos; pierogi; kielbasa; kotlet schabowy (type of breaded cutlet); gołąbki (type of cabbage roll); zrazy (type of roulade); roast (Polish: pieczeń); sour cucumber soup (Polish: zupa ogórkowa); mushroom soup, (Polish: zupa grzybowa) (quite different from the North American cream of mushroom); tomato soup (Polish: zupa pomidorowa); rosół (variety of meat broth); żurek (sour rye soup); flaki (variety of tripe soup); and barszcz among others.
