Szczawnica Coat of Arms - Szczawnica Travel GuideSzczawnica Travel Guide - a place in south eastern Poland in the province of Malopolska. Szczawnica is in the borderland between the Pieniny and Beskid Sdecki mountain ranges, located in the picturesque Grajcarek Valley.

It is both a resort and spa town neighbouring on the country of Slovakia, situated in Nowy Targ County (Lesser Poland Voivodeship) southern Poland.

As of June 30, 2007, the towns population was 7,378 and it covers 8,789 hectares, of which nearly two thirds is made up of forest.

Nearby towns include Nowy Targ 38 km distance, and Nowy Sącz 50 km away found in the valley of the Grajcarek stream which is in between the Small Pieniny and Beskid Śląski.

Entertainment in Szczawnica

You will often find folk bands in and around Szczawnica, including the Pieniny Division of Tatras Highlanders Union. The biggest event of local folklore is “Lato Pieniskie” (Pieniny Summer), organised in July by the Municipal Culture and Sports Centre, providing a unique experience of the customs and traditions of highlanders and shepherds.

Not very far from the centre of Szczawnica, in Jaworki, you can find a haven full of artists like: “Muzyczna Owczarnia“. Rock, blues, jazz, country and other concerts take place in the town. Often they will include well-known, popular Polish and foreign performers. Most weekends you will discover a gathering of connoisseurs of music.

The mountains surrounding the town are covered with forests rich with flora and fauna, attracting those that have a love of hiking.

There are numerous paths for tourists that lead to some of the highest reaches within the Pieniny Mountains and Gorce Mountains as well as to local nature reserves: Homole Ravine, Wysokie Skaki, and Biaa Woda Reserve, one of the most beautiful reserves in Poland, abounding in picturesque rock formations, gorges and waterfalls.

On the Szafranówka a 700 metre long slide has been built and is an attractive ride for both children and adults in the summertime.

With numerous cycle and horse routes, with different difficulty levels in the area, you can hire mountain bikes in Szczawnica, Stanina Koni Rajd (Rajd Stud-Farm) is located a mere 6 km from Szczawnica, in the picturesque village of Jaworki. During each season of the year, the beauty of the local nature reserves can be admired in the company of friends from aboard a gypsy cart.

Szczawnica is also an attractive place to visit in winter. When the snow comes, the town and locality is transformed into a winter sports centre. In nearby Jaworki and Durbaszka there are ski lifts and ski runs for both beginners and advanced skiers alike.

Skiers with advanced skills can experience the run with artificial snow on the slope of Palenica, which has FIS official certification, and on which Alpine contests take place. You can also enjoy a 1,800 metre long illuminated ski run on slope Palenica II.

Attractions in Szczawnica

Szczawnica - Szczawnica Travel GuideIn the centre of Szczawnica you can take the chair-lift to Palenica, from which you can admire the panorama view of the mountain ranges Tatra, Pieniny, Beskid Sdecki plus a complete view of the town.

Enjoy a ride on a wooden raft thanks to the swift current of the Dunajec river, or you can hire a kayak and try paddling down the slalom course on the rafting route. Rafting down the Dunajec Gorge - the 23 kilometre route begins in Kąty and ends in Szczawnica or Krościenko and lasts about two hours and 45 minutes and is a very pleasurable way to send a morning or afternoon in summer.

Visit the Pieniny Mountains which are a distinct mountain range 35 kilometres long and 6 kilometres wide. The Dunajec River ravine (The Dunajec is a right-bank tributary of the Vistula River) divides the range into three parts: Pieniny Spiskie which extends between Dursztyn village and Niedzica, with the highest peak, Żar at 883 metres above sea level. Second is Pieniny Właściwe – extending between Czorsztyn and Szczawnica with Okrąglica peak at 982 metres above sea level in the Three Crowns massif. If you climb to the summit you will be rewarded by a splendid and panoramic view of the area. Thirdly, the Małe Pieniny – extends between the Dunajec river in the victinity of Szczawnica and the Rozdziela pass towards the east. The highest peak of Pieniny is the Wysoka mountain at 1,050 metres above sea level.

History of Szczawnica

Szczawnica - Szczawnica Travel GuideThe town is rated among the oldest spas to be found in the Carpathians, because of its name (szczawa - sour water), and its mineral waters which go back a very long way. The first mention of the settlement was in the 15th century and tells about the bequeathing of 400 golden coins to Abraham from Goszczyce.

In 1529 it was incorporated, into Krocienko Parish, (as a result of there being too view people) under the decree of Piotr Tomicki.

Even before the first partition of Poland, in 1770, Austria annexed the land of Czorsztyn Starostwo but later sold the area to private buyers including local peasants.

Transport in Szczawnica

Buses to Nowy Targ take from 50 minutes to 1½ hours depending on the route and depart roughly every hour. Buses to Nowy Sącz take about two hours or Stary Sącz about 1½ hours. Anywhere up to eight fast buses run daily to Kraków and will take about 2½ hours. Buses to Krościenko take about 15 minutes and ­depart frequently.

The nearest railway station is at Nowy Targ where you can catch trains to Kraków and Zakopane.
