Zielona Góra

Zielona-Gora-Coat-of-ArmsZielona Góra Travel Guide - Zielona Góra is a place in western Poland in the province of Lubuskie.

Zielona Góra is a city in Lubuskie Voivodeship, in western Poland, situated on a historic route between Wroclaw and Szczecin, with a population of about 119,000 inhabitants in the city boundaries as of March 2011 and about 294,000 within the wider metropolitan area. It was granted town status in the 14th century by Flemish settlers, and originally named Grünberg or Gruenberg, until this area came under Polish rule following the border changes after World War II in 1945.

Zielona Góra was historically a prominent town due to its location on the trade route from Berlin to Upper Silesia and is located about 125km from the city of Poznań and some 150km from Berlin in Germany. It is one of the two capitals of the Lubuskie province, the other is Gorzów Wielkopolski.

Zielona Góra has been in the Lubuskie Voivodeship since 1999, prior to which it was the capital of Zielona Góra Voivodeship from 1950 to 1998. It is the governing seat of the Lubuskie Voivodeship's elected assembly (sejmik) and the Executive (centrally-appointed governor or voivode). The city's name, in Polish, Czech, and German, means “green mountain”.

The city is situated 12km south of the River Odra and surrounded by forests and lakes attracting visitors and having diverse cultural and recreation facilities located nearby. Tourists visit the city to celebrate the annual Wine Festival, which has been held every September since 1852, as well as the Song Festival. There are many historic buildings in Zielona Góra. If you enjoy exploring museums, it is worth paying a visit to the Lubuskie Regional Museum which has an interesting section devoted to local wine making.

Zielona Góra is an important industrial centre for machine and textile industries. Since the 16th century, Zielona Gora was known for it's woollen cloth production and until recently the area was the only centre of wine production in Poland.
