Baia Mare Coat of Arms Baia Mare is a municipality along the Săsar River, in northwestern Romania; it is the capital of Maramureș County. The city is situated about 600 kilometres or 373 miles from Bucharest the capital of Romania, 70 kilometres or 43 miles from the Hungarian border and 50 kilometres or 31 miles from the border with Ukraine.

Baia Mare is located to the south of the Igniș and Gutâi Mountains and had an estimated population of 138,000 as at 2019. The city administers four villages: Blidari (Kőbánya), Firiza (Felsőfernezely), Valea Borcutului (Borpatak) and Valea Neagră (Feketepatak).

Twin cities with Baia Mare

Kitwe - Zambia - Kitwe is located in central-northern Zambia, near the Congo border. It is the most important commercial and industrial centre in the Copperbelt region. Copper is extracted here, food and plastics are also produced. Baia Mare has been twinned with Kitwe since 1972.

Szolnok - Hungary - Szolnok is a city located 100 kilometres east of Budapest the capital, where the Zagyva River flows into the River Tisza. The city has 80,000 residents making it the 11th largest city in Hungary. It is an economic, cultural, tourist, educational and medical centre. Baia Mare has been twinned with Szolnok since 1990.

Wels - Austria - The town of Wells is located in the province of Upper Austria, on the River Traun. It is an industrial and railway centre with agricultural, food, pharmaceutical and textile machinery industries. The city dates back to Roman times and Wels later became an outpost against the invasion of the Avars and Hungarians. Among the notable buildings we mention the church and the castle where Emperor Maximilian died in 1519. The city of Baia Mare has been twinned with Wels since 2000.

Hollywood - USA - Hollywood is located in southeast Florida on the Atlantic coast, USA. This popular area is part of the Miami-Ft metropolitan and resort area Lauderdale. The city of Baia Mare has been twinned with Hollywood since 2001.

Bielsko Biala - Poland - The town of Bielsko-Biala is located in southern Poland, in the province of Slaskie on the Biala River, a tributary of the River Vistula. It is a railway junction and has an important woolen textile industry. The economy includes mining and a chemical industry. It is also a tourist and winter sports centre. Founded in the 13th century, the city passed to Austria in 1772 and was returned to Poland in 1919. It was named Bielsko until 1950, when it merged with the city of Biala, across the river, to form a single city. Baia Mare has been twinned with Bielsko Biala since 2003.

Hódmezovásárhely - Hungary - The city is located in South East Hungary with a population estimated in 1991 of 51,180 inhabitants. It consisted of the merging of two large communes: Hód and Vásárhely together with the village of Ábrány. It retained the characteristics of a lowland town, with a large marginal area, and was surrounded by many farms. It is an agricultural centre, but it also has a developed industry for the production of textiles and ceramics. From a tourist point of view, Hódmezovásárhely has a natural wealth of thermal waters, which feed the city's swimming pool and attract many foreigners. The town of Baia Mare has been twinned with Hódmezovásárhely since 2001.

Nyíregyháza - Hungary - The town of Nyíregyháza located in North East Hungary has about 150,000 inhabitants. It is an administrative centre, railway and roads junction. Industry includes distillery and food processing. Known in the 13th century, the city was destroyed during the Turkish occupation (16th century) of Hungary, but was rebuilt in the 18th century. The city museum contains gold relics from the Avar period. The town of Baia Mare has been twinned with Nyíregyháza since 2003.

Serino - Italy - The town of Serino in the province of Avellino consists of a number of hamlets scattered between the banks of the Sabato River and the foothills of Mount Terminio. The clean area, the green of the trees, the purity of the products, the exceptional cuisine and the hospitality of the people make this resort an ideal place for tourists. The town is surrounded by chestnut forests and offers tourists excursions to Monte Picentini Park or Terminio during the summer and in winter the main attraction is the ski slopes of Campolaspierto. The town is located at an altitude of 416 metres. According to tradition, Serino was founded by the Sabines, forced by the Romans to flee their cities during the Second Punic War. The city is an agricultural centre mainly due to the export of chestnuts. Currently the city of Serino has an area of ​​52.17 km2 and about 7,041 inhabitants. The city ​​of Baia Mare has been twinned with Serino since 2001.

On my visit to Baia Mare in September 2019 I stayed at this hotel. It was very clean, the staff were very helpful and a plentiful breakfast was provided each day. For the price, I was very satisfied.

Museums in Baia Mare

There are six museums in the city of Baia Mare. These are listed below.

Museums

Village Museum (Muzeul Satului)

The Village Museum in Baia Mare presents four ethnographic areas from northern Romania, known over time as counties: Chioarului County, Lăpuşului County, Codrului County and Maramureş County. Each of them has a different view of the past. The museum also presents the types of households according to the main occupation of the inhabitants. There are farmer households from Tara Lăpuşului, viticulturist household from Baia Mare, fruit grower household from Tara Maramureşului, etc. The village museum is the open-air section of the Maramureş Museum of Ethnography and Folk Art.
