Călărași County has a total area of 5,088 km2, and lies in the southern part of the Bărăgan Plain, it is crossed by a number of small rivers with deep valleys. On its southern and eastern sides lies the valley of the River Danube which, on the east, splits into a number of branches, forming islands which have been drained. On the western side, the rivers Argeș and Dâmbovița form a wide valley before flowing into the Danube. It is one of 41 counties in Romania. Călărași is the capital of the county.
