Sibiu County has a total area of 5,432 km2, In the South of the county are the Southern Carpathian Mountains - Făgăraș Mountains with heights over 2,500 meters, Lotru and Cindrel which make up to 30% of the county's surface. The Olt River crosses the mountains over to the South of Romania forming one of the most accessible links between Transylvania and Wallachia. In the North of the county there is the Transylvanian Plateau. The most important rivers crossing the county are the Olt in the South with Cibin an important tributary of the River Olt, and the Târnava in the North. It is one of 41 counties in Romania. Sibiu is the capital of the county.
