Accommodation and Rental Accommodation

Accommodation is bountiful in London ranging from hostels, apartments, bed and breakfast through to luxury hotels. Anywhere from £30 right up to £1,000's per night. There is no point in me listing any places to stay as there are now so many websites or apps showing places of all sorts. All I would say is that on my travels I have sometimes found it can work out cheaper to contact a Hotel or wherever you wish to lay your head down, directly to see if you can get a better price than on the agency booking sites. The street is the cheapest but I do not recommend it. When I was a youngster, I use to bed down in train and bus stations but these days they usually move you on

If you are thinking of visiting or living in London, I would very much advise you to do research about rental prices, with an average rate per month of over £970, 1,132 euros, in June 2023 for just a room. Average rental prices for a small flat is £1,600 per month. Recent Bank of England interest rate rises are pushing up rental costs.

Minimum Wage in United Kingdom

As of July 2023, the minimum United Kingdom wage per hour is currently £10.42 so based on a 35 hour week the wage per month will be £1,580 but you would have to pay tax and National Insurance on this amounting to £171 reducing it to £1,410. Often there is an extra cost of living London payment made by employers.

Museums and Art Galleries in London

I can quite easily spend a few hours in a really good museum and there are lots of them and art galleries to visit in London. Some are free and others you have to pay an entrance fee. One of the best known is the British Museum, where my grandfather use to work. There are the well known ones but do not overlook the lesser smaller museums and art galleries dotted around the capital waiting for your visit.

Food and Drink in London

Cost of a beer in London is now averaging £5.90 for a pint, a peculiar British measurement about 568ml, compared to £2.60 around the world. Mind you in Iceland a beer of 500ml will cost between 800 and 1,500 ISK, £4.71 to £8.83.

Fish and chips, probably the best known British meal will set you back anywhere between £10 and £16, another favourite, a roast dinner at a Toby's is about £13.50 (one of the best and cheapest you will find), elsewhere the sky is the limit, £30 to £150 I have seen.

A pizza depending on what you like is anywhere from £6 to whatever you wish to pay.

Transport in London

There is a well developed transportation network, including good roads and railways which ensures efficient communication links. Also, close to the county's capital, there is a local airport called City of London Airport with national and international flights.

A single peak contactless payment of £3.70 will get you from the outer London areas to Victoria on the underground and off peak £3.00 but be warned if you want to use cash this same journey will cost you £6.70.

London buses are now cashless so you will need an Oyster card, Travelcard or contactless payment card to ride on them. Fares range from £1.75 for a single journey to £5.25 for a days travel card.

Taxi fares are not cheap costing £7 for a mile or £17 for a twenty minuet journey.

Don't even think of owning a car in London unless you are on a very good salary.

A bike might be an idea but drivers in London are not always thoughtful of cyclists. There are now a number of cycle ways in the capital. The Transport For London, tfl, website has details of these.

Here are some useful websites to help you find your way to this place.

What I Think of London

I lived and worked in London for five years, commuted from Kent for about twenty years and unfortunately, have been left with negative thoughts about the place.

Do not misunderstand me, London has a lot to offer the visitor and those living there but it is an expensive, average decent hotel price per night is now over £200, and a dirty smelly city due to sewage, where in my opinion, much of it needs to be bulldozed to the ground and rebuilt. In a recent report I read on the internet, London does not even appear in the “Cleanest top ten capital European Cities”, these being, in the order of cleanest first, Lisbon, Prague, Zagreb, Rome, Vienna, Moscow, Warsaw, Paris, Berlin and Athens.

I recently had to take a friend up to Barking in east London by car to see a doctor. I ended up with a bill for £90 just because I entered the clean air zone for about twenty minuets. So my advice is don't drive in London including Greater London. The Labour Party Mayor of London who earns £154,963 per annum robs from the poor to fund his (and others with him) lavish lifestyle.
