Geography of Hampshire

The Hampshire Coast is a constantly changing landscape. With every tide it brings small changes to beach landforms. Events like the storm-surge floods of 1953 devastate coastal communities. Inland it has an abundance of rolling hills.

There are something like 35 rivers, streams and lakes in the county of Hampshire including River Anton, River Avon, (Hampshire), River Blackwater (a tributary of the River Loddon), Dark Water, River Dever (a tributary of the River Test), River Hamble, It rises near Bishop's Waltham and flows for some 7.5 miles, 12 kilometres, through the places of Botley, Bursledon, and Swanwick before entering Southampton Water near Hamble-le-Rice and Warsash. The River Test has a total length of 40 miles, 64 kilometres and it flows through downland from its source near Ashe to the estuary at Southampton, where it converges with the River Itchen to form Southampton Water. A number of these rivers flow into the Solent which is a strait that separates the Isle of Wight from the mainland of England. The Solent is 20 miles, or 32 kilometres long it varies in width between 2.5 and 5 miles or 4 and 8 kilometres.
