Situated in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship since 1 January 1999, the city was previously in the Toruń Voivodeship from 1975 to 1998.

In ancient documents the name of the town exists in different forms, such as: Grudenc, Grudencz, Grawdencz, Graudentum, Grudentz, Grudenz and Graudenz.

History of Grudziąd

The history of Grudziądz goes back to the Middle Ages when it was a fortified settlement of Chelmno Land located upon Gora Zamkowa (castle Mountain). It was seized by the Teutonic Knights in 1240 and was granted town status in 1291 and returned to Polish rule in 1466. Grudziądz was once again under foreign powers, this time by the Prussians from 1772 until 1920.

During the Second World War about 70% of the town was destroyed in hard fought battles. The medieval layout of Grudziądz is still very evident today and has twenty six granaries, (now some of which have been made into dwellings) and a Jesuit college standing in line along the bank of the river Vistula. Dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, some of the granaries have Gothic lower storeys.

Polish cuisine (Polish: kuchnia polska) is a style of cooking and food preparation originating from Poland. It has evolved over the centuries due to historical circumstances. Polish national cuisine shares some similarities with other Central European and Eastern European traditions as well as French and Italian similarities. It is rich in meat, especially pork, chicken and beef (depending on the region) and winter vegetables (cabbage in the dish bigos), and spices.

Transport in Grudziąd

Grudziadz is well placed on the map of Poland regarding both international and important country roads. About 5 km to the west of the town there is the international road E-75 linking the ports of the Tricity in the north with the southern border of Poland at Cieszyn. Through the city are the national roads: number 16 – the shortest route linking westwards with the border terminals of Poland (Slubice, Swiecko) with Warmia and Mazury regions and further on, with Kaliningrad. Road number 55 (Torun – Stolno – Kwidzyn – Elblag) and the provincial road number 536 (Grudziadz – Rypin – Sierpc – Warszawa).

The railway station is about 1km south-east of the old town, about 15 minutes walk or a ride on a tram and the bus terminal is just to the north of the station.
