In European traffic overall airberlin became the sixth largest airline in Europe with the acquisition of the holiday airline LTU. airberlin had been a member of IATA (International Air Transport Association) since 1999, making it a scheduled airline.The airline was founded in 1978 by Lelco, an American company. Following German reunification, Air Berlin was sold and became a German company in 1991. It joined the Oneworld alliance in 2012. After years of losses, Air Berlin filed for insolvency on 15 August 2017 and ceased operations on 27 October 2017.

The airline was established in 2000 and started operations in 2001. It is owned 100% by the Kayi Group.
