Geography of Bielawa

The town covers an area in excess of 36 square kilometres (14 sq miles) and is situated in the Owl Mountains part of mountain range of the Central Sudetes in south-western Poland.

History of Bielawa

The name Bielawa is thought to have derived from the Slavic name of the stream (biela, bila – biała). First documented mention of Bielawa is in 1288 being a long-lasting dispute over the area between the Bishop of Wrocław Thomas II Zaremba, and the Duke of Wroclaw and Krakow, Henry IV Right, to clarify the relations between church and state. Giving way in the dispute, the prince drew up an act setting up a foundation at St. Cross Church in Wroclaw, who also has given it, among others, 48 large feuds in the village Biela.

The event which inscribed Bielawa in the history books was brutally suppressed by the weavers rebellion in 1844, described by Nobel Prize winner Gerhart Hauptman. Bielawa's development was closely linked to the industry of weaving with origins dating back to the eighteenth century, when the first factory was established.

The expansion of factories and the accompanying construction industry in the nineteenth century resulted in a significant increase in the population which led to Bielawa being granted town rights in 1924.

From the 13th century up to 1945 Bielawa was part of Germany territory and after World War II Bielawa as well as the region of Lower Silesia was incorporated into Polish territory with the first Polish mayor being appointed on 23 June 1945.

From 1975–1998, it was part of the Wałbrzych Voivodeship and since 1999 Bielawa is an independent municipality forming part of the county of Dzierżoniów and draws tourists as a result of the nearby Owl Mountains Landscape Park.

There are many restaurants covering the usual pizza to those offering local Polish traditional and regional cuisine.

What Wikipeda says about Polish Cuisine

Polish cuisine (Polish: kuchnia polska) is a style of cooking and food preparation originating from Poland. It has evolved over the centuries due to historical circumstances. Polish national cuisine shares some similarities with other Central European and Eastern European traditions as well as French and Italian similarities. It is rich in meat, especially pork, chicken and beef (depending on the region) and winter vegetables (cabbage in the dish bigos), and spices.

It is also characteristic in its use of various kinds of noodles the most notable of which are kluski as well as cereals such as kasha (from the Polish word kasza). Generally speaking, Polish cuisine is hearty and uses a lot of cream and eggs. The traditional dishes are often demanding in preparation. Many Poles allow themselves a generous amount of time to serve and enjoy their festive meals, especially Christmas eve dinner (Wigilia) or Easter breakfast which could take a number of days to prepare in their entirety.

The Polish national dishes are bigos; pierogi; kielbasa; kotlet schabowy (type of breaded cutlet); gołąbki (type of cabbage roll); zrazy (type of roulade); roast (Polish: pieczeń); sour cucumber soup (Polish: zupa ogórkowa); mushroom soup, (Polish: zupa grzybowa) (quite different from the North American cream of mushroom); tomato soup (Polish: zupa pomidorowa); rosół (variety of meat broth); żurek (sour rye soup); flaki (variety of tripe soup); and barszcz among others.
