Geography of Kostrzyn nad Odrą

Kostrzyn nad Odrą is a town in the Lubuskie Province, Gorzów County, covering an area of 4,617 hectares, inhabited by 18,500 residents.

Kostrzyn lies at the mouth of the Rivers Odra and Warta, in the western part of the Gorzowska basin, right on the national border with Germany. Located in the province of Lubuskie the city is situated on the rivers Oder, Warta and Postomią.

To the north, it borders with the municipalities of Boleszkowice and Debno, from the south with the municipalities of Górzyca and Slonsk, to the west lies the German district of Märkisch Oderland. Geographical location and accessibility of Kostrzyn is no doubt one of its greatest economic strengths. Being a border town only 75 km from the capital of Germany, Berlin and with the Oder and Warta rivers crossing land and river routes.

The towns railway station was opened in October 12, 1857 on two levels which result from the construction of a railway line on the other Kostrzyn connecting directly with Szczecin, Wrocław, Katowice, Bydgoszcz and Warsaw. Thanks to the system of rivers and canals it is possible to link major cities both in Poland and Germany.

Museum of the Fortress Küstrin

Museum of the Fortress KüstrinThe Museum of the Fortress Küstrin is only one of it's kind in this part of Poland and Europe. Today, only the ruins and wild nature are left of the old Town and the proud Fortress of Küstrin dating from the 16th century. Küstrin was destroyed in 1945 and not rebuilt.

The ruins of the old town, the so called “Pompeii of Kostrzyn”, with its preserved infrastructure of streets, its pavements and the relics of the castle, the church and the tenements, may be visited independently from dawn till dusk. We offer guided tours of the old town and the fortress of Küstrin in Polish, English and in German upon appointment throughout the year.

Beyond that there is a modern exhibition, with a lot of multimedia of the Bastion Philip, which offers chosen aspects of the history of the fortress city Kostrzyn (Küstrin).

The Zielona Góra passenger airport is situated in Babimost. With communication links to European North-South and East-West routes. Owing to it's geographical location, there are future plans for it's development as a European cargo airport. Currently there is one passenger flight to Warsaw each day and summer time fights to Gdansk operated by SprintAir
