Gothic Niepołomice Royal Castle

Hunting was an important pastime of Royals through Europe including Poland. This royal castle located near the Niepołomice Forest was built by King Casimir III the Great on the slope of the Vistula valley. The construction of a stone castle in Niepołomice was started in the mid 14th century. The design of the castle consisted of three towers, buildings in the southern and eastern wing, and curtain walls around the courtyard.

It became the king’s favourite residence but became even more important during the reign of Władysław Jagiełło. Niepołomice Royal Castle was a meeting place of the royal council, where court judgments were passed and where royal hunts for foreign guests were a common sight. In the mid-15th century Władysław III of Varna pledged the castle so since the end of the 16th century the castle passed into the hands of the noble families of Curyło, Branicki and Lubomirskiand until the end of 18th century.

In 1506 Zygmunt Stary (Sigismund I the Old born on 1 January 1467 in Kozienice and died on 1 April 1548 in Krakow) ordered that the castle be rebuilt in the form of a quadrangle with an internal courtyard. Queen Bona Sforza's gardens were located on the southern flank. In 1550 the great fire destroyed the east and north wings. The reconstruction started in 1551 until 1568 under the supervision of Tomasz Grzymała and a sculptor Santi Gucci. It received it present Renaissance shape under the reign of Zygmunt August (born in Krakow, 1520 and died in 1572, in Knyszyn, son of Sigismund the Old and the Italian princess Bona Sforza).

The construction of an arcade courtyard began in 1635 and was completed in 1637.

The Swedish-Brandenburgian invasion in the mid-17th century in 1655 put an end to the golden age of the royal residence. In 1655 the Swedish troops attack and sacked Niepołomice, destroying the local parish church and turned the severely damaged castle into a forage depot.

In the 18th century it was acquired by King Augustus II the Strong and Augustus III.

In more recent times, in the inter-war period and after World War II it was a public building. It housed council flats, a telephone exchange and even a hospital labour ward. The reconstruction of the former royal residence began in 1991, when it became the property of Niepołomice Municipality.

The castle now serves as a cultural and business centre and has become a venue for concerts, exhibitions, business conferences, weddings and banquets. In the attic there is a 3 star hotel with 24 rooms. Niepołomice Royal Castle also houses the Lech Wałęsa Conference Centre.

What Wikipeda says about Polish Cuisine

Polish cuisine (Polish: kuchnia polska) is a style of cooking and food preparation originating from Poland. It has evolved over the centuries due to historical circumstances. Polish national cuisine shares some similarities with other Central European and Eastern European traditions as well as French and Italian similarities. It is rich in meat, especially pork, chicken and beef (depending on the region) and winter vegetables (cabbage in the dish bigos), and spices.

It is also characteristic in its use of various kinds of noodles the most notable of which are kluski as well as cereals such as kasha (from the Polish word kasza). Generally speaking, Polish cuisine is hearty and uses a lot of cream and eggs. The traditional dishes are often demanding in preparation. Many Poles allow themselves a generous amount of time to serve and enjoy their festive meals, especially Christmas eve dinner (Wigilia) or Easter breakfast which could take a number of days to prepare in their entirety.

The Polish national dishes are bigos; pierogi; kielbasa; kotlet schabowy (type of breaded cutlet); gołąbki (type of cabbage roll); zrazy (type of roulade); roast (Polish: pieczeń); sour cucumber soup (Polish: zupa ogórkowa); mushroom soup, (Polish: zupa grzybowa) (quite different from the North American cream of mushroom); tomato soup (Polish: zupa pomidorowa); rosół (variety of meat broth); żurek (sour rye soup); flaki (variety of tripe soup); and barszcz among others.
