Chełmek Travel Guide a place in south eastern Poland in the province of Małopolska. Chełmek is situated in the western part of the province, within the district of Auschwitz, between Auschwitz and Libiąż, at the confluence of the rivers Vistula and Przemsza on the left bank.

The town sits on wetlands, surrounded by pine forests, it lies in a triangle between the three large urban centres, of Krakow, about 60 km, Katowice about 40 km and Bielsko-Biala about 37km.

From 1975 to 1998 it belonged to the Bielsko-Biała Voivodeship and in 2006 it had about 9,100 inhabitants.

The town was previously known as the location for the Chełmek Shoe Factory, which until 1947 was part of Bata Shoes.

History of Chełmek

The history of Chelmek dates back to the fifteenth century, when it belonged to the parish of Jaworzno. In the sixteenth century it was taken over by the parish of Auschwitz and became the property of the noble Lord Ligęza.

During World War II, an overflow of the Auschwitz concentration prison was created at Chełmek in 1941 by Otto P. Klein in the northern part of the town.

Polish cuisine (Polish: kuchnia polska) is a style of cooking and food preparation originating from Poland. It has evolved over the centuries due to historical circumstances. Polish national cuisine shares some similarities with other Central European and Eastern European traditions as well as French and Italian similarities. Chełmek is about halfway between Krakow and Katowice on the A4.
